For this convention I had chosen a short Dagger scenario called "Commando" (which is Z1). Its a deluxe scenario with variable VC. The British player has to achieve one of three VC's in 5 turn. Hereby he has to cover a large piece of deluxe board to achieve 2 of them. The other is just killing as much Germans as possible.
I had the Germans, Mart v/d Wege played his love "the British". I created two HS whom I gave the MG. There purpose was to lay down Fire Lanes across possible routes the British could follow. The two other squads, a LMG and the 9-1 setup as far forward as possible. Britisch enter from off-board.
Fear of my squads firing at moving British holds back the 9-2 and 2,5 squads. But due to an oversite the British manage to perform a board edge creep along the west edge. I get lucky though because the brush hex is covered with a squad and the 9-1. First fire doesn't achieve anything but Subsequent does so 2 squads and a leader break. Well I got away with this mistake. The British mortar appears on the board but is immediatly broken. [I saw this scenario being played a few times but no one found some realy good use for the mortar] Germans perform a fallback defense on their part of the turn but I fail to reinforce the west edge. I gain concealment and nothing much happens.
Then the British reinforcement arrive. They enter as a big stack to perform the west edge creep again. Due to an oversite of my opponent [He didn't see the LOS] is manage to get a lucky shot at the stack which kills 2 british and automatically breaks the rest, 1 squad and 8-0 leader. Other british move forward and fire but don't manage to harm the Germans. During the German turn I fire on some broken Britsh to keep them DM. I manage but I need two squad in the precess [one HS cowered so no DM was placed]. Both of them were in the line of fire of the 9-2 stack which keeps ROF and Cassualty reduces the HS and breaks the squad. German reinforcement arrive to defend the Hotel Ulvesund. The Renault tank reinforces the west edge but breaks it CMG on the first shot [or is it shit].
British start moving again and occupy the building which used to be the German front lines. I still forget to send some troops to reinforce the west edge and use all available Germans to reinforce the Hotel. Besides an overrun [no effect] on some open ground British and a bit of regrouping nothing much happens.
Fourth turn I finaly start to see the British chosen VC. He has to get 10 VP norh of row D on board B. British use west edge creep again in an area were there are no Germans at all. The big building across the road from the Hotel block all LOS and the Hotal contains all of the Fire grouped Germans. [As you can see there is not much I can do against this mistake]. But for the British to get their 10 VP the 9-2 stack has to cross the streets and decide to dash. The dashed road is covered by al available Germans so they fire. First shot breaks the whole lot. [This might look okay but now the stack can use the rout phase to move closer to hexrow D which is not okay]. For this reason I fire again with another 9-1 led group which luckely have LOS. The get some good result but the leader snake eyes and becomes a Heroic leader, one squad double breaks for 1 VP less. I fire on this road location again with the 9-1 stack and the stack which fired first. [I don't know if this is legal but look below at the questions] Final result was a Herois 9-2 and one broken HS. Enough VP for a British win. My tank repairs it CMG but next shot breaks its MA [Usefull tank and in accodance with the aftermath; not!]
But British troops fail to cover the road. [My opponent said he didn't want to expose them to fire] Germans move in force across the road and Britisch fire doesn't achieve anything. Germans advance one MMC per hex adjecent to stacked British and possible rout location north of hexrow D. If they can break the British during the following turn they have nowhere to rout and have to surrender.
Last turn, the Brits noth of hexrow D use prep fire to no effect. It comes down to the 9-2 and rallied HS to go for the win. They have to cross some board edge open ground to achieve this ADJECENT to a 9-1 MMG stack. Well this results in a broken and Cassualty reduced HS enough VP for the Germans to win this mistaken setup scenario.
I conclude by saying. Short nice and playable a few times on one day scenario. Good demo scenario and since its almost only infantry a scenario to introduce people in the principles of ASL.
BTW I won this one by KIA-ing those 2 squads.
